Governance

Trustees play a vital role in overseeing the strategic direction, financial stability, and overall performance of the school. They are responsible for ensuring that the school operates effectively, delivers high-quality education, and remains compliant with all relevant legal, regulatory, and charitable requirements.

Trustees are not involved in the day-to-day running of the school; this responsibility lies with the Headteacher. Instead, their focus is on strategic leadership. They work to set and review the school’s vision and ethos, and help shape long-term plans that align with the school’s aims. A key part of their role is supporting and challenging the senior leadership team to ensure the school is continuously improving.

One of the trustees’ core duties is to monitor educational standards. They do this by reviewing data on pupil progress, attainment, and wellbeing. Trustees also play an important role in ensuring safeguarding arrangements are robust and that the needs of all pupils, including those with special educational needs or disabilities, are being met effectively.

Financial oversight is another critical area of trustee responsibility. They are accountable for approving and monitoring the school’s annual budget, making sure the school uses its resources wisely and achieves value for money. As Prism are also a registered charity trustees must ensure compliance with Charity Commission and Companies House regulations.

Trustees must also ensure that the school meets all legal and regulatory obligations. This includes compliance with the Independent School Standards, health and safety legislation, employment law, and data protection requirements. They are responsible for managing risk across the school and ensuring that suitable measures, policies, and insurances are in place to protect pupils, staff, and the school’s reputation.

Another key duty of trustees is accountability. They are responsible for appointing the Headteacher and conducting their performance management. They also help to ensure the school is transparent in its operations and engages with parents, stakeholders, and external regulators appropriately.

Trustees are expected to act with integrity, honesty, and in the best interests of the school at all times. They must avoid conflicts of interest, maintain confidentiality where require, and commit to attending meetings and participating actively in their role.

Trustees of Prism play a critical governance role, ensuring that the school is well-led, financially secure, and delivering the best possible outcomes for its pupils.
